How does the Champions League work ?
A certain number of teams from each league in Europe qualify for the Champions League. This number depends on the quality of the league and ranges from one to four teams. Some teams have to play qualifiers to get into the tournament, while higher-ranked teams are placed straight into the group stage.
New Format for the Champions League
Starting from the 2024/25 season, the Champions League will adopt a new format known as the “Swiss Model.” Instead of the traditional group stage, there will be a single league phase including all participating teams. Here’s how it works:
- League Phase: Each team will play 8 matches against different opponents (4 home, 4 away).
- Qualification for Knockout Stage: The top 8 teams in the league phase will automatically qualify for the Round of 16. Teams finishing in 9th to 24th place will enter a two-legged playoff to secure their spots in the Round of 16.
- Knockout Stages: The knockout stages will follow the traditional format with home and away legs, leading up to the final.

When is each stage?
The group stage runs from 19th September 2024 to 13th December 2024. The dates for the knockout rounds are as follows:
13, 14, 20, 21 February 2025 – Round of 16, 1st leg
5, 6, 12, 13 March – Round of 16, 2nd leg
9, 10 April – Quarter-finals, 1st leg
16, 17 April – Quarter-finals, 2nd leg
30 April, 1 May – Semi-finals, 1st leg
7, 8 May – Semi-finals, 2nd leg
1 June – Final
